Change is constant.
The Greek philosopher, Heraclitus of Ephesus, said  – “the only constant in life is change”. Yet, when change happens, we are often surprised. We are all human.

Change is constant. It’s always there.

Bill Gates said “We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten. Don’t let yourself be lulled into inaction.”

The Greek philosopher, Heraclitus of Ephesus, said  – “the only constant in life is change”.

Yet, when change happens, we are often surprised. We are all human.

As we are in the twilight of 2019, some of our ADAPTOVATE team shared a few unexpected changes they’ve identified in 2019 in their consulting life. {from the future edit:  Of course the biggest change happened in early 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic hit us all}

OUTCOMES

Doug Ross, is our co-founder at ADAPTOVATE. Doug found that in 2019 a great learning for ADPATOVATE was giving our coaches the freedom to provide the answers to teams.

STOP THE PRESS! What??  Don’t they have to work it out for themselves?

Well, no. He shared with us, for consultants it’s about being reminded that the outcome, is what’s important.  How we get there, typically in our case, by introducing New Ways of Working into an organisation, can sometimes overshadow this.

Doug explains “All of us get tired of being coached, and sometimes just want to be told an answer. Often teams and leaders are just tired of thinking, and just want ‘the coach/consultant ‘ to give them a potential answer to execute upon and see if it works.”

He continues “Many agile coaches will tell you “you have failed ‘cause the team has not worked it out’ ”.  However, if the team needs a shove as they are tired, then it is our coaches job, to jump in and give them an answer – right or wrong.

As the outcome, and testing and learning from the outcome, is where the value lies. The outcome is what we are trying to achieve, not pure agile, lean, or any other process, and making sure our coaches know the difference has been a great learning for ADAPTOVATE.”

GIVING BACK

On a more personal note, our Project Lead in LA, Alan Trivaldi shared an unexpected change in his consulting life in 2019.  “I have found myself asking how my consulting skills can benefit underdeveloped nations. How can I share my consulting leadership capabilities to empower the younger generation in underdeveloped areas of the work where access to education is limited.”

DEEPER UNDERSTANDING

Steve Walton from our New York office, says “This year has seen me having deep conversations with stakeholders more so than explaining the basics. I think as Agile fundamentals are more widely known, our clients of using more of our skills in helping them to deliver value.”

MAINTAINING RELATIONSHIPS

Finally Andy Koh, from our Singapore office said “One unexpected change is the emphasis on building and maintaining relationships over confirming a good solution and gaining acceptance of it. As a consultant, many times we are brought in to solve problems and recommend solutions based on analysis of the situation presented in a relatively short period of time.

In the role of the Agile Consultant, we still do that, but the emphasis is on bringing the client along on the journey to test and learn, adjust and adapt over time. This is based on a degree of trust, and having a strong relationship with the client helps facilitate that.”

Look out for changes in 2020.  They will come, embrace them.  Because… change is constant.
