Evan Tyson – Australia

The Back Story monthly interview features ADAPTOVATE employees from around the world.

Our team is the greatest asset we have, and it’s a privilege to share just a little bit more about who they are. This month we feature Evan Tyson – a consultant from our Australia team.

First up – how long have you worked with us?

I started in September 2022

Why did you join us? Were you in the industry previously, or looking for a new career direction?

I wanted to broaden my skill set to consider broader implications beyond digital, ideally within the public sector. For me, ADAPTOVATE is a fantastic fit that allowed me to build my transformation toolkit to consider the strategic to the operational. Since then, I have had the chance to work with executive teams to craft their annual strategies, to coach programs of work towards operational excellence, and to flex that digital toolkit to help organisations across a range of sectors accelerate outputs using the buzzword of the day…Chat GPT! Of course, that is just a sample of what I have done, but I’m excited to keep going.

Presently, I find myself deeply immersed in an exhilarating public sector initiative, where we’re spearheading business process re-engineering efforts to streamline the citizen experience and increase the value add of staff. My passion for this sector stems from a firm belief in its capacity to effect meaningful change. By empowering the public sector to prioritize citizen-centric approaches, we unlock a cascade of positive impacts that reverberate throughout communities.

I’m excited about the journey ahead, fuelled by the prospect of continued growth and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the world.

Which talent would you most like to have?

If I were to choose a talent I’d most like to have, it would be the ability to speak multiple languages fluently. Being able to communicate effortlessly with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds opens up countless opportunities for connection and community.

What do you most value in your friends and in colleagues – and are they different things?

There are a myriad of ways I could answer this question, but in the end, I think it comes down to respect and authenticity. If these two ingredients exist it’s hard to go wrong with both friends and colleagues.

Which historical figure do you most identify with?

This is a difficult question, ask me on another day and I might give you another answer.

Today, I’ll land on Kahlil Gibran. He was a poet, artist and philosopher. I appreciate his insights into the human experience, his ability to express complex ideas through poetry, and his philosophical ruminations on universal truths.

How has your previous experience and career helped define where you are now? Would you have done things differently?

My previous experience exposed me to a range of industries from retail to the public sector to fintechs. Generally, this was through a digital lens which has been useful as I have often found myself being a conduit between the technology arm of organisations and the rest. Both can accelerate the organisation, but often they aren’t talking the same language.

As for going back and doing things differently, when it comes to where I am at in life, unless there is a reason for it I try not to indulge in counterfactual thinking too often. I am happy with where I am at and do not think I would change much.

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

It may sound cheesy and it’s hard to attain, but I find life is about embracing the journey, savouring the moments, and living a life guided by authenticity, purpose, and gratitude.

Outside of work, I love the outdoors, so sign me up for a life of rock climbing, hiking, and camping – all with my lovely partner, friends, and family. So take this, throw in hanging out with my dog Penny and playing board games – if we can land all this then life is looking pretty groovy.

However, happiness is also derived from feeling challenged and working towards goals that align with my values of making a positive impact in the lives of others, particularly through the public sector.

Evan during a climb.

What is your greatest extravagance

If I’m honest it’s probably my climbing gear…it’s expensive but it also keeps me safe so a worthwhile investment I would say!

What is your motto?

I’m borrowing this one, but I have seen “don’t let ‘perfection’ be the enemy of “good”. That one goes down a treat.

Finally – You’ve time travelled back to your 10- year old self – What advice would you give?

Embrace curiosity and never stop asking questions. The world is full of wonders waiting to be discovered, so keep exploring and seeking knowledge.
